SUMMARY:Online Author Talk with Jason Mott
DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to join us as we talk to New York Times bestselling author Jason Mott about his recent novel Hell of a Book. This magnificent work of fiction is deeply honest\, at times electrically funny\, and is a book that goes to the heart of racism\, police violence\, and the hidden costs exacted upon Black Americans and America as a whole. \nIn Hell of a Book\, a Black author sets out on a cross-country publicity tour to promote his bestselling novel. That storyline drives Hell of a Book and is the scaffolding of something much larger and more urgent: Mott’s novel also tells the story of Soot\, a young Black boy living in a rural town in the recent past\, and The Kid\, a possibly imaginary child who appears to the author on his tour. \nAs these characters’ stories build and converge\, they astonish. While this heartbreaking and magical book entertains and is at once about family\, love of parents and children\, art and money\, it’s also about the nation’s reckoning with a tragic police shooting playing over and over again on the news. And with what it can mean to be Black in America. \nUnforgettably told\, with an electrifying plot and characters who burn into your mind\, Hell of a Book is the novel Mott has been writing in his head for the last ten years. And in its final twists\, it truly becomes its title. Register now! \nAbout the Author: Jason Mott is the author of two poetry collections and four novels. His first novel\, The Returned\, was adapted for television and aired on ABC under the title “Resurrection.” Since then\, his novels that followed have received various accolades and acclaim. His most recent novel\, Hell of a Book\, won the Sir Walter Raleigh Award for Fiction Winner\, was a Carnegie Medals For Excellence Longlist nominee\, and the winner of the 2021 National Book Award for Fiction. He lives in hermitude in Southeastern North Carolina. \nRegister at https://libraryc.org/lima/38920

SUMMARY:Online Author Talk with Nina Totenberg
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to an intimate conversation with Nina Totenberg as she talks about her nearly fifty-year friendship with Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and her book Dinners With Ruth: A Memoir on the Power of Friendships. \nFour years before Nina Totenberg was hired at NPR\, where she cemented her legacy as a prizewinning reporter\, and nearly twenty-two years before Ruth Bader Ginsburg was appointed to the Supreme Court\, Nina called Ruth. A reporter for The National Observer\, Nina was curious about Ruth’s legal brief\, asking the Supreme Court to do something to declare law that discriminated “on the basis of sex” to be unconstitutional. In a time when women were fired for becoming pregnant\, often could not apply for credit cards or get a mortgage in their own names\, Ruth patiently explained her argument. That call launched a remarkable\, nearly fifty-year friendship. \nDinners with Ruth is an extraordinary account of two women who paved the way for future generations by tearing down professional and legal barriers. It is also an intimate memoir of the power of friendships as women began to pry open career doors and transform the workplace. At the story’s heart is one\, special Ruth and Nina saw each other not only through personal joys\, but also illness\, loss\, and widowhood. During the devastating illness and eventual death of Nina’s first husband\, Ruth drew her out of grief; twelve years later\, Nina would reciprocate when Ruth’s beloved husband died. They shared not only a love of opera\, but also of shopping\, as they instinctively understood that clothes were armor for women who wanted to be taken seriously in a workplace dominated by men. During Ruth’s last year\, they shared so many small dinners that Saturdays were “reserved for Ruth” in Nina’s house. Dinners with Ruth also weaves together compelling\, personal portraits of other fascinating women and men from Nina’s life\, including her cherished NPR colleagues Cokie Roberts and Linda Wertheimer; her beloved husbands; her friendships with multiple Supreme Court Justices\, including Lewis Powell\, William Brennan\, and Antonin Scalia\, and Nina’s own family—her father\, the legendary violinist Roman Totenberg\, and her “best friends\,” her sisters. \nCelebrated NPR correspondent Nina Totenberg delivers an extraordinary memoir of her personal successes\, struggles\, and life-affirming relationships. Inspiring and revelatory\, Dinners with Ruth is a moving story of the joy and true meaning of friendship. \nAbout the Author: NINA TOTENBERG is NPR’s award-winning legal affairs correspondent. She appears on NPR’s critically acclaimed news magazines All Things Considered\, Morning Edition\, and Weekend Edition\, and on NPR podcasts\, including The NPR Politics Podcast and its series\, “The Docket.” Totenberg’s Supreme Court and legal coverage has won her every major journalism award in broadcasting. Recognized seven times by the American Bar Association for continued excellence in legal reporting\, she has received more than two dozen honorary degrees. A frequent TV contributor\, she writes for major newspapers\, magazines\, and law reviews. \nRegister at https://libraryc.org/lima/40633

Brought together by chance\, they forge an inseparable bond\, despite risking the gods’ wrath. \nWhen word comes that Helen of Sparta has been kidnapped\, all the heroes of Greece are called upon to lay siege to Troy in her name. Seduced by the promise of a glorious destiny\, Achilles joins their cause\, and torn between love and fear for his friend\, Patroclus follows. Little do they know that the cruel Fates will test them both as never before and demand a terrible sacrifice. \nIn Circe\, to Helios\, god of the sun and mightiest of the Titans\, a daughter is born. But Circe is a strange child–neither powerful like her father nor viciously alluring like her mother. Turning to the world of mortals for companionship\, she discovers that she does possess power: the power of witchcraft\, which can transform rivals into monsters and menace the gods themselves. \nThreatened\, Zeus banishes her to a deserted island\, where she hones her occult craft\, tames wild beasts\, and crosses paths with many of the most famous figures in all of mythology\, including the Minotaur\, Daedalus and his doomed son Icarus\, the murderous Medea\, and\, of course\, wily Odysseus. But there is danger\, too\, for a woman who stands alone\, and Circe unwittingly draws the wrath of both men and gods\, ultimately finding herself pitted against one of the most terrifying and vengeful of the Olympians. To protect what she loves most\, Circe must summon all her strength and choose\, once and for all\, whether she belongs with the gods she is born from or with the mortals she has come to love. \nAbout the Author: Madeline Miller is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of two novels: The Song of Achilles\, which won the Orange Women’s Prize for Fiction 2012\, and Circe\, which was short-listed for the Women’s Prize for Fiction 2019. Miller holds an MA in Classics from Brown University\, studied in the Dramaturgy department at Yale School of Drama\, where she focused on the adaptation of classical texts to modern forms\, and taught Latin\, Greek\, and Shakespeare to high school students for over a decade. \n\nRegister at https://libraryc.org/lima/41375
