SUMMARY:Tastes Like War: An Online Author Talk with Grace M. Cho
DESCRIPTION:Register for this online talk here: https://libraryc.org/lima/22975 \nOn Thursday 2/16 at 1:00 PM\, you’re invited to an insightful chat with award-winning author Grace M. Cho as she discusses her memoir\, Tastes Like War: \nGrace M. Cho grew up as the daughter of a white American merchant marine and the Korean bar hostess he met abroad. They were one of few immigrants in a xenophobic small town during the Cold War\, where identity was politicized by everyday details—language\, cultural references\, memories\, and food. When Grace was fifteen\, her dynamic mother experienced the onset of schizophrenia\, a condition that would continue and evolve for the rest of her life. \nPart food memoir\, part sociological investigation\, Tastes Like War is a hybrid text about a daughter’s search through intimate and global history for the roots of her mother’s schizophrenia. In her mother’s final years\, Grace learned to cook dishes from her mother’s childhood in order to invite the past into the present\, and to hold space for her mother’s multiple voices at the table. And through careful listening over these shared meals\, Grace discovered not only the things that broke the brilliant\, complicated woman who raised her—but also the things that kept her alive. \nAbout the Author: Grace M. Cho is Associate Professor of Sociology at the College of Staten Island. She received a PhD in Sociology and Women’s Studies from the CUNY Graduate Center and an MEd from Harvard School of Education. Her work crosses disciplinary boundaries and seeks to engage popular audiences. From 2005 to 2007 she was a contributing performance artist for Still Present Pasts: Korean Americans and the Forgotten War\, a collaborative art project based on the oral histories of Korean War survivors and their children. Her participation in Still Present Pasts influenced the form and content of her first book\, Haunting the Korean Diaspora: Shame\, Secrecy and the Forgotten War (University of Minnesota\, 2008) which combined fiction\, performance\, autoethnography and sociological research. It won a 2010 book award from the American Sociological Association for its innovative methodology. Her second book\, Tastes Like War\, was a finalist for the 2021 National Book Award for Nonfiction and the winner of the 2022 Asian Pacific American Literature Award for Adult Nonfiction.

SUMMARY:Back in a Spell: Online Author Talk with Lana Harper
DESCRIPTION:Register for this online author talk here: https://libraryc.org/lima/22753 \nJoin us on Thursday 2/9 at 7:00 PM for a magical evening with New York Times bestselling author Lana Harper as she discusses the enchanting third installment of her immensely popular The Witches of Thistle Grove series\, Back in a Spell. \nBack in a Spell follows Nineve Blackmoore and even though she won’t deny her love for pretty (and pricey) things\, Nineve Blackmoore (known by Nina by most) is almost painfully down-to-earth and sensible by Blackmoore standards. But after a year of nursing a broken heart inflicted by the fiancée who all but ditched her at the altar\, the powerful witch is sick of feeling low and is ready to try something drastically different: a dating app. \nAt her best friend’s urging\, Nina goes on a date with Morty Gutierrez\, the nonbinary\, offbeat soul of spontaneity and co-owner of the Shamrock Cauldron. Their date goes about as well as can be expected of most online dates—awkward and terrible. To make matters worse\, once Morty discovers Nina’s last name\, he’s far from a fan; it turns out that the Blackmoores have been bullishly trying to buy the Shamrock out from under Morty and his family. \nBut when Morty begins developing magical powers—something that usually only happens to committed romantic partners once they officially join a founding family—at the same time that Nina’s own magic surges beyond her control\, Nina must manage Morty’s rude awakening to the hidden magical world\, uncover its cause\, and face the intensity of their own burgeoning connection. But what happens when that connection is tied to Nina’s power surge\, a power she’s finding nearly as addictive as Morty’s presence in her life? \nAbout the Author: Lana Harper is the New York Times bestselling author of the Witches of Thistle Grove series\, including Payback’s a Witch\, From Bad to Cursed\, and Back in Spell. Writing as Lana Popović\, she has also written four YA novels about modern-day witches and historical murderesses. Born in Serbia\, Lana grew up in Hungary\, Romania\, and Bulgaria before moving to the US\, where she studied psychology and literature at Yale University\, law at Boston University\, and publishing at Emerson College. She lives in Chicago\, where she spends most of her time plotting witchy stories and equally witchy tattoos.

SUMMARY:xkcd Webcomic and What if? Series Creator : Online Author Talk with Randall Munroe
DESCRIPTION:Register for this online talk here: https://libraryc.org/lima/22024 \nPlease join for what is sure to be the most fun-filled hour of the day as we chat online with Randall Munroe about his new book What If? 2: Additional Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions. \nThe millions of people around the world who read and loved What If? still have questions\, and those questions are getting stranger. Thank goodness xkcd creator Randall Munroe is here to help. Planning to ride a fire pole from the moon back to Earth? The hardest part is sticking the landing. Hoping to cool the atmosphere by opening everyone’s freezer door at the same time? Maybe it’s time for a brief introduction to thermodynamics. Want to know what would happen if you rode a helicopter blade\, built a billion-story building\, made a lava lamp out of lava\, or jumped on a geyser as it erupted? Okay\, if you insist. \nBefore you go on a cosmic road trip\, feed the residents of New York City to a T. rex\, or fill every church with bananas\, be sure to consult this practical guide for impractical ideas. Unfazed by absurdity\, Randall consults the latest research on everything from swing-set physics to airplane-catapult design to clearly and concisely answer his readers’ questions. As he consistently demonstrates\, you can learn a lot from examining how the world might work in very specific extreme circumstances. \nFilled with bonkers science\, boundless curiosity\, and Randall’s signature stick-figure comics\, What if? 2 provides his best answers yet to the weirdest questions you never thought to ask. \nAbout the Author: Randall Munroe is the creator of the webcomic xkcd and author of What If?: Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions\, Thing Explainer: Complicated Stuff in Simple Words\, How To: Absurd Scientific Advice for Common Real World Problems\, and What if? 2: Additional Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions. Randall was born in Easton\, Pennsylvania\, and grew up outside Richmond\, Virginia. After studying physics at Christopher Newport University\, he got a job building robots at NASA Langley Research Center. In 2006 he left NASA to draw comics on the internet full time and has since been nominated for a Hugo Award three times. In 2013\, the International Astronomical Union named an asteroid after him: asteroid 4942 Munroe is big enough to cause mass extinction if it ever hits a planet like Earth.

SUMMARY:The Gilded Ones Series: Online Author Talk with Namina Forna
DESCRIPTION:Register for this online author talk here: https://libraryc.org/lima/21610 \nJoin us at 2:00 PM on Saturday 1/7 for an action-packed online conversation with New York Times bestselling author of The Gilded Ones Series in a discussion about her second installment in the series\, The Merciless Ones.  \nIn Forna’s first New York Times Bestselling book\, The Gilded Ones\, readers are introduced to sixteen-year-old Deka\, who lives in fear and anticipation of the blood ceremony that will determine whether she will become a member of her village. Already different from everyone else because of her unnatural intuition\, Deka prays for red blood so she can finally feel like she belongs. But on the day of the ceremony\, her blood runs gold\, the color of impurity–and Deka knows she will face a consequence worse than death. \nThen a mysterious woman comes to her with a choice: stay in the village and submit to her fate\, or leave to fight for the emperor in an army of girls just like her. They are called alaki–near-immortals with rare gifts. And they are the only ones who can stop the empire’s greatest threat. \nKnowing the dangers that lie ahead yet yearning for acceptance\, Deka decides to leave the only life she’s ever known. Uncovering mysteries surrounding herself and the kingdom all along the way. \nThe second thrilling installment\, The Merciless Ones\, picks up six months since Deka freed the goddesses in the ancient kingdom of Otera and discovered who she really is… but war is waging across the kingdom\, and the real battle has only just begun. For there is a dark force growing in Otera—a merciless power that Deka and her army must stop. \nYet hidden secrets threaten to destroy everything Deka has known. And with her own gifts changing\, Deka must discover if she holds the key to saving Otera… or if she might be its greatest threat. \nAbout the Author: (From publisher Press Release) Namina Forna is the author of the instant New York Times bestseller The Gilded Ones\, the first book in an epic fantasy trilogy. She has an MFA in film and TV production from USC School of Cinematic Arts and a BA from Spelman College. She now works as a screenwriter in LA and loves telling stories with fierce female leads.
