SUMMARY:2026 Sloan Lecture Series-The Making of Flower City-On-line Only
DESCRIPTION:ON-LINE ONLY          Register here. \nJanuary 15 @ 6:30 PM- The Making of Flower City: The Erie Canal\, American Empire\, and the Horticultural Transformation of the Country \nBorn of the Erie Canal\, Rochester\, New York exploded from a small village into a boomtown. Developing into a prominent hub for flour-milling\, Rochester was an icon of America’s market revolution. But when the Panic of 1837 struck the region\, the economic foundations of the city collapsed. In the wake of collapse a new group of horticulture reformers sought to reform the city\, region\, and their residents. By the middle of the decades of the nineteenth century\, they city became home to a group of plant nurserymen and seed dealers whose transnational reach remade the North American landscape and transformed Rochester from the Flour City into the Flower City. \nPresented by Erie Canal Museum

SUMMARY:On-Line Author Talk with Liz Moore
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to welcome Liz Moore to discuss her latest work\, The God of the Woods\, an instant New York Times bestseller and one of NPR’s 2024 “Books We Love” highlights. \nEarly morning\, August 1975: a camp counselor discovers an empty bunk. Its occupant\, Barbara Van Laar\, has gone missing. Barbara isn’t just any thirteen-year-old: she’s the daughter of the family that owns the summer camp and employs most of the region’s residents. And this isn’t the first time a Van Laar child has disappeared. Barbara’s older brother similarly vanished fourteen years ago\, never to be found. \nAs a panicked search begins\, a thrilling drama unfolds. Chasing down the layered secrets of the Van Laar family and the blue-collar community working in its shadow\, Moore’s multi-threaded story invites readers into a rich and gripping dynasty of secrets and second chances. It is Liz Moore’s most ambitious and wide-reaching novel yet. \nJoin us in conversation with Liz as we embark on a tale of thrilling twists and disturbing disappearances. Register today to “enter the woods\,” if you dare! \nAbout the Author: Liz Moore is the author of five novels: The Words of Every Song\, Heft\, The Unseen World\, the New York Times bestselling Long Bright River\, and The God of the Woods. A winner of the 2014 Rome Prize in Literature\, she lives in Philadelphia and teaches in the MFA program in Creative Writing at Temple University. \n  \nRegister Here.
